PRONUSLAB TEAM

Biologist and laboratory team leader

Kemal Demir

PronusLab role: To be confirmed

I’m Kemal, a biologist with a master’s degree from Ankara University and experience across clinical laboratories, genetics and food safety. My work has taken me from laboratories in Türkiye to roles in Germany, where I’ve worked with genetic analysis, tissue samples and clinical diagnostics. I enjoy the combination of careful technical work, quality assurance and teamwork that makes a laboratory reliable. Through PronusLab, I hope to share perspectives from my path and help others explore the many directions a career in biology can take.

MY JOURNEY

My journey

I studied biology at Ankara University, completing my bachelor’s degree in 2011 and my master’s in 2014. I began my professional career supporting procedures in a cardiology catheterisation laboratory, then moved into laboratory work within Türkiye’s health and agriculture ministries.

Those roles gave me experience in clinical testing and food safety. In 2023, I joined a genetics laboratory in Germany, where I worked with microscopy and flow cytometry. I later worked with tissue samples at München Klinik before taking up a laboratory leadership role at Zytognost in Munich in April 2025.

My path has shown me how broadly biology can be applied—from food analysis to genetics and clinical diagnostics—and how important careful documentation and quality control are across those settings.

TOPICS I CAN HELP WITH

Topics I can help with

Laboratory careers: Exploring roles in clinical diagnostics, genetics and food safety.

Laboratory methods: Discussing experience with flow cytometry, microscopy, microbiological testing and analytical instruments.

Quality and documentation: Understanding the practical importance of laboratory procedures, quality control and standards such as ISO/IEC 17025.

Working across fields and countries: Sharing my experience moving between different laboratory settings in Türkiye and Germany.

WHAT I WISH I’D KNOWN

What I wish I’d known

Explore different laboratory fields. A biology degree can lead to work in clinical diagnostics, genetics, food safety and other areas.

Build good documentation habits early. Recording methods and results clearly is part of producing reliable work.

Learn the purpose behind quality procedures as well as the technical steps. Both matter when working with samples and reporting results.

Kemal’s personal challenge and advice to his younger self can be added here after his review.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS

My contributions

PronusLab seminars, articles, projects, volunteering or resources to be confirmed.

Useful resources

ISO/IEC 17025 — An introduction to the standard for laboratory competence, impartiality and consistent operation.

TÜBİTAK — Türkiye’s scientific and technological research council, which offers research programmes and opportunities. Kemal participated in a TÜBİTAK-supported student research project.

These are suggested starting points; Kemal can replace them with two resources he personally recommends.
